Unquenchable demand

Western Europe faces a tension between attempting to contain health costs and a desire to remain at the forefront of technological innovation, according to a recent report by Espicom. Thus, hospitals will need to invest in the provision of new medical equipment and technologies to maintain this high standard of care. In addition, healthcare services will need to become more efficient in order to cope with financial pressures and the needs of ageing populations. As part of this, there will be an increased demand for efficiencies, for example, medical devices that facilitate minimally invasive surgery, which can increase the number of operations performed in day surgery and ensure a faster turnaround of patients. Despite recessionary pressures, market growth rates over the coming years will be positive.

Aging population fuels growth

An aging world population is also creating substantial demand for medical services. Majority of healthcare facilities, of late, are reducing bed capacity to minimize cost, and to promote advanced, short-stay surgical methods, according to a recent report published by Reportlinker. However, the development of home administered chemotherapy drugs, enhancement in emergency care management, and advanced short day-stay surgical methods reduce the pressure of maintaining more beds in hospitals and healthcare centers. As a result, competition has intensified in the market, paving way for price-cuts and market share shifts.

An open and a latent market

The medical equipment market is extensive and increasingly sophisticated, adopting new technologies and online ordering systems, according to Australian health directory. It can be divided into several sub-markets such as biomedical engineering, diagnostic and laboratory equipment, life support, monitors, therapeutic equipment and surgical instruments, among others. Furthermore, the hospital equipment market is equally wast. There are manufacturers and suppliers of medical storage systems, clean rooms, drug refrigerators, vaccine refrigerators, mortuary refrigerators, stainless steel products, theatre suite shelving and sliding basket systems and a range of other specialists. Medical and hospital equipment manufacturers and distributors are frequently large international corporations with subsidiaries or agents in Australia. There are also many Australian companies successfully competing in both international and national markets. Besides, the latent demand for hospital furniture in India is not actual or historic sales, according to a report by Research and Markets. In fact, latent demand can be either lower or higher than actual sales if a market is inefficient (i.e., not representative of relatively competitive levels). Inefficiencies arise from a number of factors, including the lack of international openness, cultural barriers to consumption, regulations, and cartel-like behaviour on the part of firms. In general, however, latent demand is typically larger than actual sales in a market.
